Fireside Chat – Energy Efficiency and Cooling Solutions for Sustainable Data Centres
Time: 12 November, 13:45–14:15
Venue: Standard Pavilion
Introduction
This 30-minute fireside chat featured two experts discussing how advances in energy efficiency and innovative cooling methods are reshaping the sustainability of data centres—one of the fastest-growing sources of ICT sector energy use and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
The dialogue highlighted the latest practices and technologies in reducing energy intensity, from liquid cooling and heat reuse to optimized airflow management and renewable integration. It also considered how international standards and reporting frameworks, such as ITU-T Recommendations on data centre efficiency and sustainability, could guide industry and policymakers in accelerating progress.
Objectives
This session:
1) explored energy efficiency measures that lower the environmental footprint of data centres;
2) showcased innovative cooling methods, including liquid cooling, free-air cooling, and heat recovery;
3) discussed how efficiency improvements contribute to ICT’s climate commitments and net zero targets;
4) highlighted the role of international standards in harmonizing measurement, reporting, and best practices.
